Would you like to Volunteer?

From annual and ongoing training programs to on-site lodging in our restored sleeper car, we provide the tools and support to help every volunteer succeed. No prior railroad experience is required — just curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to learn. Whether you’re greeting passengers, planning events, or helping turn wrenches, your time and talent directly impact thousands of people each year and keep our living history on track.

  • Behind every great train ride is a great team. Our administrative volunteers keep the wheels turning — managing events, assisting with ticket sales and merchandise, supporting accounting, and helping passengers and members with friendly customer service. These dedicated individuals handle the day-to-day details that make railroad history come alive for thousands of guests each year.

  • From the cab to the caboose, our operations volunteers bring the railroad to life. Locomotive and service crews maintain, prepare, and operate the vintage engines that power our heritage trains — whether steam, diesel, or both. These dedicated individuals keep every trip safe, smooth, and memorable. We provide on-the-job training for non-covered service positions and welcome volunteers with prior experience or engineer and conductor certifications. Safety, training, and rules classes are offered regularly throughout the year to ensure the highest standards of operation.

  • Our onboard service volunteers are the heart of the passenger experience. They greet guests, answer questions, and help create a comfortable, memorable journey from the moment passengers step aboard. Whether serving refreshments, assisting with boarding, or sharing stories of railroad history, these volunteers ensure every ride feels like a first-class trip through time.

  • Preserving history takes skilled hands and determined hearts. Our mechanical and restoration volunteers tackle the gritty, rewarding work of maintaining and rebuilding our locomotives, passenger cars, and historic equipment. From painting and carpentry to welding and electrical work, they transform rust and rivets into living history — ensuring our trains can keep inspiring generations to come.
